Old T-Shirt, New Necklace

Have you seen the pictures all over Pinterest of old T-Shirts made into infinity scarves? So pretty!  I decided to try this simple craft myself. However, as is often the case (at least with me), my simple craft didn't turn out quite the way it was supposed to.

I began with an old T-Shirt out of my closet. Any type of T-shirt will do, the bigger the better, and it is a plus if you can find one that is seamless.
Lay your shirt out flat and start by cutting off the bottom hem (lay this piece aside to use later). Begin cutting 1-2" wide strips horizontally from the bottom of the shirt up to the armpit. Don't worry about keeping your cuts perfect.
When you've cut all your strips hold them together and give them a BIG LONG stretch so that the raw edges curl in on themselves.
Taking the reserved hem piece make a cut in it so it becomes one long piece and wrap it around the strands to hold them in place. Wrap it a few inches in one direction and then back in the other direction. Bring the ends of the hem together, tie them in a knot, trim the loose ends and tuck them under the wrapped area, out of sight and voila!

This is where I realized my scarf wasn't really long enough or full enough to look like much of a scarf. Maybe if I'd used an extra large men's shirt it would've turned out differently. Soooo . . . , not being one to give up in defeat I decided to cut it a bit shorter and make it into a necklace instead. Since it looked rather plain  for my taste I decided to embellish it with some handmade rosettes.
This rosette was made from hem tape and a sheer organza-type fabric that I tore into strips for a frayed look. For a tutorial on making your own rosettes you can link back to my post OldButtons&Lace.
I wrapped and sewed the rosettes onto the T-Shirt strips in two places, a grouping of them on the bottom, and a single rosette on the top (to hide the cut I made to shorten my scarf into a necklace!)

The necklace can be worn off-center or centered, depending upon the style of blouse one is wearing.

I've had many compliments on my necklace and I am so happy with the way it turned out. Of course there is a LESSON to be learned here. I cannot tell you how many times my flops have turned into something much better than what I originally had in mind. Why is that? When I was a child my mother always said, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."  Thanks mom for the values you instilled in me as a child, both in the little things and in things of eternal value.
Philippians 3:14 "I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

So, I really wanted to get one of my younger friends to model this for me so I could share pictures of the necklace being worn by an actual person.  Since I never seemed to get the opportunity I've included a self-portrait so you can see how it looks. NOTICE the strategically placed OldThingsNew logo placed across my "seasoned" neck. Haha!
I've had quite a few compliments on this necklace and I'd like to try making it in some other colors. Look at the lovely washed out colors of these T-Shirts belonging to my husband. Hmmm . . . I wonder . . .

This craft project is so quick and so easy. Without the addition of the rosettes you could easily make one in 10 minutes. I like the way it dresses up a simple T-shirt but it is also pretty enough to wear with something dressier. Next, I think, will be a bracelet to match!

Frenchy Bed Makeover

I've had some comments about my header picture, in particular the bed in the garden.  Since I've never done a before and after post about this bed, I decided I'd better just do it!  I found this little vintage bed at a garage sale last Spring.  The $5.00 pricetag made it too good to pass up! Do people really know what they're giving away?  I think not.
When I began browsing through my pictures I saw that on the same day that I set up my bed to take "after" pictures, I also took a ton of pictures of the flowers in my garden. Looking outside at my barren winter garden it is hard to believe it was so colorful last year.

Before I get to the pics of the bed, allow me to detour a bit and take you on a full color tour of my garden last summer.  Hopefully you'll catch a glimpse of Spring, warmer weather and sunshine.  We long for sunshine here in the PacNW. Hence, the jumbo sized bottles of VitD and the Happy Light Deluxe Energy Lamp by the bedside!

How was it? Did it make you want to start planting? Still too cold here . . . but I digress.  On to the "after" pics of my Frenchy bed. Painted in Annie Sloan Pure White Chalk Paint, trimmed in Duck Egg Blue, antiqued with a little silver Rub 'N Buf, and then sealed with ASCP Soft Wax.  Here is a peek at a leg first . . .
Here is the headboard with a wood applique' I purchased online and applied with wood glue. White paint, followed by blue, then distressed and sealed.
And here is a picture of the headboard and footboard together in my garden.  It looked so nice set among the flowers.
Of course I didn't leave it there. Off to the "store" in my garage it went, along with all of the other furniture I am getting together to begin selling . . . somehow . . . Etsy? Craigslist? I'm still trying to figure that out and I'm certainly open to suggestions from those of you who've had some some experience selling their furniture.

So that was one of the first pieces I ever painted using Chalk Paint and I loved it so much it ended up in my header, along with my New Picture Frames post, my paint and brushes display and my Old Things New Button . . . which, by the way, you can grab on my sidebar!

I hope you all enjoyed a little stroll through my garden.

Many blessings to you,
P.S. In case you are interested I did a review of Three Homemade Chalk Paint Recipes in a previous post. I love ASCP but I also love making my own chalk paint from time to time. It has been fun to play around with the huge selection of colors available at my local paint supply store.

Inspired in Seattle Part 3!

So this is the last part of my 3-day Girl's Getaway to Seattle . . . browsing, shopping, eating and just plain relaxing! If you missed Part 1 and Part 2 please link back to see some great locally owned stores.

Well, we started out this day with a strong need for fortification for the day ahead. Can you believe what we found? A store by the name of The Chocolate Box. What more can I say?
They had chocolates of course . . .
. . . but they also had a Hot Chocolate Bar!

After a salted caramel mocha and a sample of the European Sipping Chocolate we were ready to face the day.

Here's Deanna stating her opinion on the whole thing! Isn't she just so cute?

We saw a LOT of home decor stores on this particular day, with a variety of styles but this was my favorite and the one I chose to highlight. This store has a great mix of styles from rustic to elegant.

Let's go inside . . .

Here we go with the light fixtures again. I love this chandelier made from vintage electric insulators.
The next fixtures are coastal inspired. Does this make you think of a puffer fish?
 How about an octopus?
This reminds me of the cork floats on a fishing boat,

And this one makes me think of sea grass waving under the ocean.

On to some of the wall hangings. I was really drawn to this horse head for some reason.
These are really fun! My oldest daughter tells me, "No animal heads on the walls!"
This old headboard is amazing as wall art. It got me to thinkin' . . .
Here you have some of the seating sold in the store.

 Nice legs, huh?

All very unique, right? The chairs to this dining set spoke to me with their elegance . . .

. . . combined with rusticity.

Here are a few more vignettes for you . . .

. . . and a beautifully arranged seating area. There is definitely a lot of Asian influence in Pacific NW decorating.
Great Jones Home is a wonderful store and I've only given you a peek at all that they have to offer. One Seattle reviewer said, "If Elle Magazine had a store, this would be it!" They are in the process of working on their website but check back, and pay them a visit the next time you are in Seattle.

So how could I end this final Seattle post without a visit to the famous Pike Place Market? A whole 'nother kinda shopping experience!

This is one of the market's famous "fish throwers" posing for my camera!

Haha! That is one BIG mouth!

I really love Seattle and I miss living closer to this beautiful city (my childhood home).  It is a great vacation destination, with so many fun things to do and see. I hope you all get the chance to experience Seattle one day.

I'm so glad you joined me and my great friend Deanna on our shopping experience. Time to roast some vegies and get the fish on the grill!

      Blessings,

NOTE: I've not been compensated in any way for reviewing any of the businesses in this post.
